NBFAA’s research foundation, AIREF, sponsored a comprehensive study that scientifically confirms alarm systems are valuable crime-fighting tools. This study was recently released by researchers at the Rutgers University School of Criminal Justice (SCJ) in Newark and was a comprehensive study of five years of statistics by researchers who found that residential burglar alarm systems decrease crime. While other studies have concluded that most burglars avoid alarm systems, this is the first study to focus on alarm systems while scientifically ruling out other factors that could have impacted the crime rate.

January 1st: Carbon Monoxide Detectors Required For All New Georgia Homes

Effective January 1, 2009, carbon monoxide detectors will be required in all new one- & two-family homes and townhomes of three stories or less.

Often called the "silent killer," carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane oil and methane) burn incompletely.  In homes, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel are potential sources of carbon monoxide.  Cars or generators that run in an attached garage can also produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

In recent years, the popularity of carbon monoxide detectors has increased.  Yet, many homes still do not have these safety-enhancing devices.  As well, many citizens remain unfamiliar with the hazards of carbon monoxide poisoning.

From Awareness To Advocacy To New Rules For Georgia.  In early 2005, Georgia State Senator Gloria Butler read an article about a family whose exposure to carbon monoxide proved fatal.  She researched Georgia's laws to determine if her own state had any carbon monoxide detector-related regulations.  At that time, Georgia did not.

Senator Butler initially tried to mandate carbon monoxide detectors through legislation. She was told that code changes were best handled though the regulatory process at DCA.

In 2008, Senator Butler began working with DCA's Construction Codes Department.  The initial proposal called for hard-wired combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Bettie Sleeth, HBAG Vice-President of Regulatory Affairs worked with Senator Butler to get the proposal amended to only require a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector near each sleeping area. In July 2008, the State Codes Advisory Committee accepted this amended proposal and recommended a change to the International Residential Code.  This code change was approved by the DCA Board in November 2008.

Impressive video surveillance technology demonstrated at Hiawassee City Hall

Mountain Audio & Video, LLC an Electronic System Integrator located in Blairsville, hosted a demonstration with Pelco (a global leader in video security systems) on Friday morning at the Hiawassee City Hall.

This demonstration was initiated by Mountain Audio & Video from a request by city officials interested in applying the technology of video surveillance cameras for the City of Hiawassee and Hiawassee City Hall.

Present for the demonstration was Mayor Mathis, Police Chief Jimmy Wright, City Manager Rick Stancil, Clerk Wylene White, Fire Chief Mitch Floyd and other officials in government, EMS or Police Services.

Representatives, Carole Konkel and Michael Hinman of Mountain Audio & Video and Greg Tinsley, Regional Manager of SpecPoint, were all on hand to answer questions about the system and what could be offered to the city.

Mountain Audio & Video, LLC arranged with Pelco representative David Kolodkin of SpecPoint, for Pelco to transport their Mobile Product Showcase to the City of Hiawassee to demonstrate the latest in video surveillance technologies that are available. This technology has potential to enhance law enforcement with time & efficiency, as well as provide live video feed and recording capabilities from key locations in the county to the 911 dispatch center, and other monitoring locations. Live video images available to the public via the internet could also be beneficial to the citizens and entities such as, the Towns County tourism industry.

The Pelco Mobile Product Showcase - a cross-country traveling, "mini-Pelco" on wheels, is actually a customized semi tractor trailer complete with every product family representation that is sold under the Pelco name. The modern day truck/ office was parked outside City Hall for the demonstration and tour.

Officials left the session with ideas on advanced technologies to aid local government and emergency agencies within the county and beyond.
